Refurbished iPad Generations

The biggest changes between iPad generations are usually in the chip, display, connectivity, and design. If you’re moving up a few generations, you’ll generally notice a bigger difference in performance and features.

• Chip: Newer models use faster and more efficient processors
• Display: Some newer models have larger or improved displays
• Connectivity: USB-C and newer Wi-Fi standards are available on newer models
• Cameras: Newer generations offer improved video-calling and camera features

For example, the iPad 11th Generation uses the A16 chip and an 11-inch Liquid Retina display, while older standard iPad generations use earlier processors and designs.

The right choice depends on the tasks, budget and how long the iPad needs to be used.

• Older generations: Suitable for browsing, streaming, reading, email and basic apps
• Mid-generation models: A good balance of performance, features and price
• Newer generations: Better for multitasking, creative work, demanding apps and longer-term use
• Higher-end models: Better suited to professional workloads and advanced features

Apple Pencil support depends on the specific iPad model and generation. Here’s a quick guide:

• iPad 6th–9th Gen: Apple Pencil (1st generation)
• iPad 10th Gen: Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation with adapter)
• iPad 11th Gen (A16): Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil (1st generation with adapter)

Look at the key differences between the two models, particularly:

• Chip: Affects performance and efficiency
• Display: Compare the size and display technology
• Storage: UConsider how much space you actually need
• Connectivity: Check the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Cellular options
• Apple Pencil: Check compatibility with the Pencil you plan to use
• Software: Newer generations generally receive iPadOS updates for longer

Comparing the iPad 9th Gen, iPad 10th Gen and 11-inch iPad Air across these features can give you a better idea of what you’re getting with each model.

As of 2026, iPadOS 26 supports iPad 8th generation and later, along with several iPad Air, iPad Pro and iPad mini models. The iPad 7th generation and older standard iPads are not on Apple's current iPadOS 26 compatibility list.

If software support is important, newer models such as the iPad 9th Gen, iPad 10th Gen and iPad 11-inch A16 are worth considering.
